Reversibility testing is usually performed when an asthma diagnosis is unclear.

Patients take a spirometry test and are then given an inhalation of a short-acting bronchodilator. After 30 minutes the spirometry test is repeated to see if the bronchodilator had any dilatory effect on the airways.
